Jordan Daily – On World Humanitarian Day, UNRWA’s Jordan Field Office joined the global humanitarian community in a symbolic “Stand in Solidarity” to honor and remember humanitarian workers worldwide, particularly those who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year’s observance is especially somber for UNRWA, as we mourn the loss of 208 of our colleagues in Gaza since the escalation of the conflict on 7 October,UNRWA said in a statement.
UNRWA staff gathered in front of the main gate of their office building in Amman, standing united with humanitarian workers across the globe to demand greater accountability and protection for those who risk their lives to serve others. This collective act of solidarity aims to draw global attention to the ongoing and devastating impact of armed conflicts on civilians and humanitarian actors.
The Director of UNRWA Affairs in Jordan, Olaf Becker, emphasized the incredible work and sacrifices made by UNRWA and other humanitarian workers in Gaza and the critical need for more protection for them. “The loss of over 200 of our colleagues in Gaza is a devastating reminder of the dangers faced by those who are committed to providing life-saving support in the world’s most perilous environments. These were not just numbers; they were each an individual person, many with families, driven by a profound sense of duty and compassion, who paid the ultimate price while serving others. Today, we stand in solidarity with their memory and call on the international community to uphold its moral and legal obligations to protect civilians and humanitarian workers in conflict zones. They are not a target.”
This year’s World Humanitarian Day theme, “Protecting Civilians & Humanitarians” underscores the urgent need to safeguard humanitarian efforts amidst rising global conflicts. The UNRWA Jordan Field Office’s participation in this global initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting and protecting vulnerable communities, despite the significant challenges posed by conflict and instability.
As part of the global humanitarian family, UNRWA will continue to advocate for the safety, dignity, and well-being of those we serve and those who serve them. The protection of humanitarian workers is not just a legal matter — it is a matter of humanity, the statement concluded.
