UNRWA, Korea launch $1 million TVET project for Palestine refugee youth in Jordan

Jordan Daily – The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Government of the Republic of Korea have signed a $1 million project to upgrade technical and vocational education for Palestine refugee youth in Jordan.

Signed in Amman, the year-long initiative aims to modernize UNRWA’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Programme by aligning courses with labor market needs, improving training facilities, and developing a financially sustainable model for the Agency’s Vocational Training Center, the Embassy of Korea said in a statement received by Jordan Daily.

The project seeks to address high youth unemployment in Jordan, where two in five young people are jobless. UNRWA currently operates two TVET centres offering more than 40 courses to about 2,400 Palestine refugee students, with high completion and employment rates.

“This initiative represents a strategic shift in the TVET Programme,” said Olaf Becker, UNRWA Director of Affairs in Jordan. “By continuing to align more courses with market demands, we are ensuring that UNRWA youth are not only skilled but also have a long-term economic opportunity while ensuring the continuity of our services.”

Korean Ambassador to Jordan Pilwoo Kim said the funding renews Korea’s ongoing support for UNRWA’s humanitarian and development work. “This year’s contribution is a renewal of Korea’s consistent support for UNRWA’s humanitarian causes and human development efforts.”

Ambassador expressed his hopes for substantial outcomes of the new project funded by Korea, emphasizing that Korea’s contribution also reflects its deep solidarity with the Government and people of Jordan, which have welcomed and supported those in need coming from its neighborhood, including the Palestinian people.

Korea has been a longstanding partner of UNRWA, supporting efforts to enhance education and boost youth employability across the region, the statement noted.
