Wealth strategist urges local investors to focus on long-term stock market growth

Jordan Daily – Financial strategist Suhail Farran urged local investors to adopt long-term, disciplined approaches to wealth management during a lecture at the Rotary Amman Cosmopolitan.

Speaking on August 27th to a room of members and guests eager to learn practical investment strategies, Farran emphasized the importance of emotional control and strategic planning in building sustainable wealth.

“Investing is about interacting with your money wisely, not falling in love with individual stocks,” Farran said, cautioning against making decisions driven by fear or short-term market fluctuations. He stressed that market dips should not prompt panic withdrawals, explaining that such reactions often benefit large brokerages at the investor’s expense.

Farran highlighted several avenues for Jordanian investors to access the U.S. stock market, including the Interactive Brokers platform, which he noted allows Jordanians to open accounts with minimal deposits and zero trading fees. “Jordan is greenlit for this platform, which is a significant opportunity for Arab investors,” he said.

Using real-world examples, Farran illustrated the principle of dollar-cost averaging, where monthly investments over a year can outperform lump-sum investments by mitigating market volatility. He also introduced Rule 72, a guideline to estimate how long it takes for an investment to double at a given interest rate, contrasting bank savings with stock market returns.

“Banks generate 12–15% on your deposits, yet offer customers a fraction of that, often less than inflation,” Farran said. “Direct investment in index funds or diversified portfolios allows individuals to capture this growth themselves.”

He showcased the power of compound growth through hypothetical scenarios: starting investments at age 20 versus age 40 demonstrated that early, consistent contributions—even modest ones—can accumulate millions over decades. Farran encouraged parents and grandparents to teach younger generations about investing, describing it as “free money” that grows over time.

The lecture concluded with a demonstration of advanced stock strategies, including renting shares through options contracts to generate additional income. Farran logged into a live account to illustrate potential returns from this approach, underscoring the practicality of the strategies he teaches to clients with varying investment experience.
