Jordan Daily – U.S. intelligence agencies have updated their assessments of who could succeed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, whom Israel have killed in a military operation in southern Gaza.
American officials are concerned that Sinwar’s successor could deeply influence whether Hamas is open to negotiating a ceasefire with Israel and the release of hostages.
Among the potential successors is Sinwar’s brother, Mohammed Sinwar, who, according to U.S. officials, would likely doom any negotiations due to his hardline stance. Mohammed has been described as being as uncompromising as Yahya and oversaw Hamas’s tunnel network.
Another possibility is an external figure who might be more willing to strike a deal, while a third option is former Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal. However, Meshaal’s past support for the Sunni uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has strained relations with Iran, which could complicate his leadership prospects.
