Jordan Daily – Despite growing focus on increasing women’s participation in politics, female candidates continue to face formidable barriers in their bids for parliamentary seats, according to speakers at a recent forum.
The panel, titled “Challenges facing women in running for parliamentary elections,” was held at Yarmouk University on Monday and brought to light the economic, political, and social hurdles that many women encounter.
The session featured participation of former Senator Naifah Munawer Al-Zaben of the Irada Party, Sanaa Mihyar of the National Charter Party, and Hiba Rbeihat of the Taqaddom Party.
Economically, the speakers identified a critical issue: the financial constraints that prevent many women from adequately funding their election campaigns. This includes difficulties in securing resources for campaign offices and other necessary expenses. The panelists called on authorities to provide targeted economic support to level the playing field for women candidates.
Politically, the discussion highlighted the need for greater empowerment and education to ensure women understand the importance of their role in the electoral process. Although Jordanian women are legally entitled to participate fully in politics, many still lack the political training and encouragement needed to make a significant impact.
Socially, the panelists pointed to the resistance that some women face within their own families, who may discourage or even obstruct their efforts to run for elections. This social opposition, they noted, remains a significant obstacle in a society where women are often expected to limit their public roles.
