World Bank approves $4.7 million grant to support municipalities in Jordan

Jordan Daily – The World Bank has approved an additional grant of $4.7 million for the Municipal Services and Social Resilience Project in Jordan.

The new grant aims to assist Jordanian municipalities and host communities affected by the influx of Syrian refugees in enhancing services and providing employment opportunities for both Jordanians and Syrians. It also aims to strengthen their capacity to support local economic development.

According to the World Bank, the project has contributed to improving municipal services for over 2.8 million direct beneficiaries, including 20% Syrian refugees and 47% women.

The project has also provided over 27,400 temporary workdays, and it is expected to exceed 110,000 workdays by project completion.

In October 2013, the World Bank initially approved the project with a grant of $52.7 million. Subsequently, additional financing grants were provided, including $10.8 million in December 2016, $30 million in December 2017, and $8.8 million in August 2020.

Jordan has been hosting over 1.3 million Syrian refugees since the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011, including 660,000 registered Syrian refugees with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
