Addressing the roots of conflicts

By : Rev. Samer Azar

Jordan Daily – It is customary in our lives to deal with the results and outcomes of a problem rather than addressing its root causes. This shortcut may succeed for a while, but such an approach does not delve into the real causes, sometimes requiring significant interventions for genuine healing. Though this can be painful and demands decisive decisions, it is the only sustainable way to deal with problems and conflicts.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not an exception; it succeeds to the same rule. For the past 76 years, attempts have been made to remedy the situation, but to no avail. On October 7, 2023, we witnessed the ‘Al-Aqsa Storm,’ which many politicians and analysts interpret within the framework of the injustices Palestinians endured for more than seven decades under military rule and occupation.

His Majesty King Abdullah II, in all his speeches, urges the world to address the root causes of the Palestinian issue and the conflict, leading to an expansion of violence affecting everyone. During HM’s address in the presence of President Joe Biden at the White House and at his meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris, His Majesty presented a real roadmap for restoring peace, security, and stability in the region. This cannot be achieved without a Palestinian State living side by side with Israel, with Jerusalem as its capital.

How many innocent lives must be lost before real efforts are made to bring an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and create a political horizon? It has become clear that neither military nor security measures can achieve sustainable peace for all stakeholders but rather peace based on justice.

Enough of the bloodshed, enough of the heartbreak, enough of the horrific scenes of injured, lost, killed, and missing people under rubble. Our lands are meant to be holy, executing principles of humanity, mutual respect, and justice for all. ‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'”
