JD - The Kremlin has declined to comment on whether the United States has warned Moscow against sharing intelligence with Iran, as tensions simmer in the Middle East.
The refusal comes amidst reports alleging that Moscow has been providing sensitive information to Tehran, including the locations of U.S. warships and aircraft in the region, further complicating the already volatile situation.
U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated that he emphasized to Russia the importance of not sharing information with Tehran. When asked about Witkoff's statement, and whether U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin discussed the matter during their phone call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov offered a measured response.
"All I can say is that Witkoff is in constant contact with his Russian counterparts, and this communication channel allows us to exchange information on the most sensitive issues," Peskov said, without directly addressing the allegations of intelligence sharing.
Witkoff later revealed that in the call between Trump and Putin, "the Russians said they did not share intelligence." He added, "We can take their word for it."
Trump stated that he had no indications of Russian support for Iran in the conflict, but added that even if that were the case, it "doesn't help much."
Russia and Iran maintain a close alliance, having agreed last year to cooperate in the face of "common threats."
