JD - Washington is reportedly considering military options that include deploying Marine infantry to seize Iranian islands in a bid to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.

The potential move comes amid escalating tensions in the region and rising global energy prices, spurred by disruptions to shipping.

The Pentagon has begun preparing the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, a rapid-response force of approximately 2,200 personnel, currently en route to the Middle East aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, according to reports. The unit is expected to arrive in just over a week.

This self-sufficient, ship-based unit could be used to conduct amphibious or airborne operations, including seizing one or more islands off Iran’s southern coast. The aim would be to use these islands as leverage against Tehran or as a base to counter attacks on commercial shipping, reports indicate.

U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly pressing for ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
