Jordan Daily - Arab Fertilizers and Chemicals Industries Ltd. (KEMAPCO) has committed to voluntarily reducing nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from its nitric acid production facility in Aqaba, aiming to strengthen the global competitiveness of its fertilizer exports, the company's chairman said.

KEMAPCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of Arab Potash Company, last week signed a memorandum of understanding with Ministry of Environment and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority to cooperate on cutting N₂O emissions from its operations.

Chairman Shehadeh Abu Hdeib said the initiative is the first of its kind in Jordan and is being implemented with support from the German government through the Nitric Acid Climate Action Group (NACAG) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, supporting Jordan's climate commitments while improving the environmental performance of the country's industrial sector.

Abu Hdeib said KEMAPCO's current emissions already comply with internationally accepted standards, but the company chose to adopt the project voluntarily as part of its strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and prepare for increasingly stringent sustainability requirements in global markets.

He added that the initiative would help the company meet environmental standards, including the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). KEMAPCO exports high-grade potassium nitrate fertilizer to about 90 countries.

The company also pledged to operate and maintain emissions-reduction technology, continuously monitor emissions, and provide regulators with the data and access needed to verify the project's results.
