Jordan Daily – Border Guards killed several smugglers in a firefight on the northern border with Syria on Tuesday, a military source said.
The source said the smugglers opened fire on the guards at around 4 a.m. ,using the fog and low visibility to try to bring in large quantities of drugs.
The guards returned fire, killing some of the smugglers and forcing the rest to flee back into Syria, the source added.
Warrant Officer Iyad Abdel Hamid Al-Naimi was killed and Warrant Officer Salem Miftin Salem was injured in the clash, the source said. Salem was taken to a hospital in Ruwaished, a town near the border, and his condition is stable.
The source said the Jordanian Armed Forces – the Arab Army would deal firmly with any attempt to infiltrate or smuggle across the border, and would protect the national security of the kingdom.
