Jordan Daily – The European Union will provide €10 million to UNICEF over the next two years to help vulnerable children and youth in Jordan access education and protection, UNICEF- Jordan said on Wednesday.
In a statement sent to Jordan Daily , the funding will benefit more than 36,000 Syrian refugees in camps and 9,000 children and adolescents of various nationalities in Makani centres, which offer integrated learning, child protection and skills development services.
The EU and UNICEF reaffirmed their partnership with the Jordanian government, which has been hosting more than 650,000 registered Syrian refugees since 2011, according to the U.N. refugee agency.
“Youth is our most important wealth,” said Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, the EU ambassador to Jordan, adding that the new program aimed to ensure access to quality education for 45,000 Syrian and Jordanian students.
Philippe Duamelle, UNICEF’s representative to Jordan, said the EU’s continued support is vital to help children and young people build a successful future.
UNICEF’s Makani programme, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development, promotes the well-being of the most vulnerable children and adolescents in Jordan. UNICEF also works with the Ministry of Education to strengthen the resilience of Jordan’s education system.
