Jordan Daily – Transport Minister said on Sunday that the country’s trade is not affected by the disruption of maritime shipping in the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, a vital waterway for global oil and cargo flows.
Wissam Tahtamouni told a meeting of exporters to the U.S. and European markets that Jordan is not impacted by the rerouting of ships in the strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, but warned that it could increase the cost and time of shipping and insurance.
She said the government is working with the private sector to find solutions to ensure the continuity of supply chains and diversify the shipping routes.
She added that Jordan and Egypt had agreed on a preferential shipping route through the Suez Canal and had finalized the legislation for it.
She said the Jordanian-Egyptian route was planned before the current crisis in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which started about two years ago, as an alternative for shipping to and from the Mediterranean ports.
