World Bank approves $1.1 billion to support Jordan’s economic reform and resilience

Jordan Daily – The World Bank Group has approved $1.1 billion in financing for Jordan to advance its Economic Modernization Vision and bolster socio-economic resilience amid ongoing regional and global shocks.

The funding supports four projects aimed at boosting inclusive growth, strengthening social protection, backing startups, and expanding clean energy initiatives, the Bank said in a statement.

“Jordan continues to demonstrate commitment to advancing critical reforms to build a more competitive, inclusive, and resilient economy,” said Jean-Christophe Carret, World Bank Division Director for the Middle East. “These new programs reflect a comprehensive approach… critical to achieving sustainable growth.”

The largest share, $400 million, will go to the Jordan Growth and Competitiveness Development Policy Financing, supporting reforms to improve the business climate, access to finance, and job creation—especially for youth and women.

Another $400 million will finance the Resilient and Sustainable Social Protection Program, targeting 1.2 million vulnerable individuals through cash assistance, health insurance, and job-linked services.

The Innovative Startups and SMEs Fund (ISSF 2.0) will receive $50 million to expand equity financing and attract $150 million in private capital over five years, supporting 100 startups and 1,500 jobs, with a focus on youth and women-led businesses.

An additional $250 million will scale up the Electricity Sector Efficiency and Supply Reliability Program, aiding Jordan’s clean energy transition and improving grid stability and financial sustainability.

“This new financing reflects our continued partnership with the World Bank to promote economic opportunities, enhance social protection, and strengthen Jordan’s innovation and clean energy agenda,” said Zeina Toukan, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation.

The projects mark a major step under the World Bank’s Country Partnership Framework for Jordan 2024–2029, the statement noted.
