Jordan Daily – Al-Kindi Hospital launched activities marking the World Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Tuesday 15/10/2024, an event held under the patronage of Dr. Mariam Abu Halawa, Vice Chairman of the Hospital Board and consultant in obstetrics, gynecology, and IVF.
The initiative, aligned with October’s global awareness campaign, aims to highlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, as recognized by the World Health Organization.
Dr. Abu Halawa emphasized the critical role of hosting such educational events to increase awareness and equip women with knowledge on early breast cancer detection methods. She outlined the key role women play in early diagnosis, advocating for self-exams, clinical screenings, and regular mammograms.
She also highlighted the hospital’s gynecology department’s contributions to guidance, examinations, and treatment, in addition to the advanced breast imaging facilities at the radiology unit. Dr. Abu Halawa shared international statistics on breast cancer prevalence and underscored the effectiveness of early detection in improving recovery rates.
A cancer survivor spoke candidly about her journey with breast cancer, sharing a heartfelt story that resonated deeply with attendees. She emphasized the importance of resilience and self-acceptance, encouraging women to face the disease with courage.
Dr. Maram Shawabkeh from the Jordan Breast Cancer Program delivered a presentation on the impact of early detection in preventing breast cancer, noting an increase in the number of women participating in the program over recent years. She highlighted the program’s role in reducing breast cancer incidence through ongoing support and outreach across various regions.
Radiology technician Alaa Ata provided insights into practical breast examination techniques and described signs that may indicate breast cancer, stressing the necessity of regular mammograms for early detection. Pediatric and neonatology specialist Dr. Jihan Al-Zubeiri spoke on the protective effects of breastfeeding against breast cancer, advocating for greater awareness and promotion of breastfeeding.
Obstetrics and gynecology department head Fatima Abu Farda discussed preventive measures for breast cancer and encouraged women to avoid lifestyle behaviors that increase cancer risk. Reproductive specialist Rozan Al-Rifai presented on egg and embryo preservation.
At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Abu Halawa honored the participants, presenting a commemorative plaque to the director of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program for their notable efforts in promoting awareness and curbing the spread of breast cancer.
