Jordan Daily – University of Petra won the top gold ranking among Jordanian universities at the 2026 Jordanian Nuclear Science Competition, the university said, marking a new scientific achievement for the institution.
The winning team, “GammaFlow” from the university’s chemistry department, was recognized at an event organized by the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, which drew broad participation from students, researchers and educators.
The team secured first place for its project, “Gamma-Modified Membranes for Smart Water Purification,” aimed at developing sustainable solutions for greywater treatment amid rising water scarcity in Jordan.

The system combines gamma radiation to enhance membrane durability, electrospinning to produce high-efficiency filtration materials, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for real-time water quality monitoring.
University President Rami Abdul Rahem said the achievement reflects the University’s research capabilities and student innovation, while praising the team’s efforts and the support of academic staff.
During the ceremony, chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Khaled Toukan honored the university for its continued support of scientific research and innovation.

Project leaders said the technology improves treatment efficiency, reduces operational costs and extends membrane lifespan. It targets greywater, which accounts for 50–70% of household wastewater, enabling reuse for irrigation and cleaning.
They added the system is scalable and can be locally manufactured at low cost, with potential applications ranging from households to larger institutions.
