Jordan Daily - The number of refugees registered with the UNHCR in Jordan has reached 400,000, including about 380,000 Syrians, the agency's spokesperson in Jordan, Youssef Taha, said on Saturday.
More than 20% of the refugees live in the Zaatari and Azraq camps, Taha said, adding that Jordan remains one of the world's largest refugee-hosting countries relative to its population, with roughly one in every 18 people in the country classified as a refugee.
Taha said hosting large refugee populations places pressure on Jordan's economy and stressed that protecting refugees is a shared international responsibility.
Despite the voluntary return of nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees to Syria, around 380,000 Syrians remain in Jordan, he said. A recent survey conducted by the U.N. refugee agency found that more than 70% of Syrian refugees hope to return home eventually, but many cite financial constraints, lack of housing and damaged infrastructure in Syria as barriers.
Taha also warned of a significant funding shortfall affecting services for refugees, noting that international support has declined sharply over the past four years.
Earlier, the agency said 23,150 refugees had returned to Syria since the start of 2026, including 2,500 between June 1 and June 13. Women accounted for 49% of returnees and men 51%, while children made up 41% of those returning. About 58% returned with their families, while 42% returned individually or without all family members.
