Jordan Daily -  Dr. Khaled Al lahham, chief executive officer of the Jordanian Tourist Transport Company (JETT), has been elected chairman of the Arab Union for Land Transport after securing 15 votes against three for his rival, the union said on Sunday.

Al-Laham succeeds Khaled Al-Hokail, chief executive of Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO), following elections held during the union's general assembly attended by representatives from across the Arab world.

The Arab Union for Land Transport, established in 1976 under the Council of Arab Economic Unity, promotes the development, integration and regulation of the land transport sector across Arab countries. It represents public, private and mixed-sector transport organizations and serves as an observer to several Arab ministerial bodies and international transport organizations.

Al-Laham's election comes as the transport sector undergoes rapid technological and operational changes. During his tenure at JETT, he has overseen the expansion of the company's operations, the modernization of passenger services and the adoption of digital technologies aimed at improving service quality.

In a statement, Al-Laham said the vote reflected the confidence of member states and pledged to strengthen regional cooperation in land transport. His priorities include drafting a regional transport strategy, improving cross-border connectivity, advancing digital transformation through smart systems and fleet management, enhancing safety and environmental sustainability, expanding training programs, and fostering partnerships to support transport and logistics projects.

He also pledged to strengthen links between the transport and tourism sectors to boost Arab tourism and economic development.
