Jordan Daily- A German delegation held talks with Yarmouk Water Company on Monday on expanding cooperation and supporting strategic water and wastewater projects, including a proposed €15 million grant to improve infrastructure and service sustainability.
The meeting brought together Yarmouk Water Company Chief Executive Ghislain Juvanon, Management Contract Director Ahmad Al Awamleh, and Laura Schnitler, Development Cooperation Representative at the German Embassy in Amman, and Nicolas von Kalm, Jordan Desk Officer at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), as well as representatives from the German Development Bank (KfW), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).
Awamleh said in a statement received by Jordan Daily, the discussions were held under the directives of Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Al Saud, as part of efforts to strengthen coordination with international donors supporting the country's water sector.
He said the talks focused on mobilising funding for priority projects aimed at improving the sustainability of water and wastewater services, while outlining the objectives of the Yarmouk Water Company management contract, which is aligned with Jordan's Economic Modernisation Vision and National Water Strategy 2023-2040.
The contract seeks to improve operational efficiency, reduce non-revenue water, strengthen customer services, enhance financial and institutional sustainability, and build workforce capacity through measurable performance targets, Awamleh said.
Juvanon outlined the company's operational and institutional challenges, highlighting the need for investment in infrastructure and the rehabilitation of water and wastewater networks serving Jordan's northern governorates.
He said international cooperation remained essential to addressing chronic water scarcity, modernising infrastructure and improving operational performance.
The two sides also discussed a potential 15 million euro grant that would finance priority projects to upgrade water and wastewater systems and strengthen long-term service reliability.
Nicolas von Kalm, Jordan Desk Officer at BMZ, said the visit provided an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the company's priorities and the challenges facing the water sector in northern Jordan.
He said continued dialogue with Yarmouk Water Company would help identify future areas of cooperation and support projects with lasting development impact.
The visit comes ahead of Jordanian-German governmental talks, during which Jordan plans to present the company's priorities and financing needs to German development institutions.
The delegation also toured the Wadi Al Arab Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Wadi Al Arab Hydropower Plant, where officials reviewed projects related to groundwater management, water quality, sustainable sludge management and renewable energy in the water sector.
