Flowers Beyond Borders : Ikebana demonstration & workshop

Jordan Daily – The Embassy of Japan in Jordan, in collaboration with the Ikebana International Jordan Chapter, co-hosted the Ikebana Demonstration and Workshop at the premises of the Embassy, marking another milestone in promoting mutual cultural understanding between Japan and Jordan.

The event featured a lecture on Ikebana by Mrs. Randa Kawar, President of the Jordan Chapter of Ikebana International; demonstrations by four classrooms from three schools- Ikenobo, Ohara, Sogetsu and Sogetsu Seiko- affiliated with the Jordan Chapter; and a workshop where participants experienced ikebana firsthand. Participants deepened their comprehensive understanding of ikebana and learned how it expresses harmony with nature, balance, and mindfulness – core elements of Japanese aesthetics.

At the opening, Ambassador of Japan to Jordan ASARI Hideki delivered remarks, stating that Ikebana embodies Japanese philosophy and value and emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange and the deepening friendship between Japan and Jordan. Mrs. Kawar also explained the significance of the Ikebana International motto, “Friendship Through Flowers,” expressing the hope that people would cultivate friendship and coexist through ikebana.

The introduction of Ikebana in Jordan began in the 1980s by the wife of the then-ambassador and other Jordanian women. In 1988, the Jordan Chapter was formally established by the Headquarter of the Ikebana International. Since then, Ikebana has been embraced by the Jordanian people, with numerous exhibitions and events held, broadening appreciation for Japanese traditional culture. The Ikebana International Jordan Chapter received the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation in 2007. Furthermore, Mrs. Hind Sherif Nasser Bin Jamil, who was involved in establishing the chapter, was awarded the Decoration of Order of the “Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” in 2025 for her contributions to promoting Japanese culture through ikebana.

Today’s event formed part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote Japanese culture and strengthen cultural exchange between Japan and Jordan. By sharing Ikebana as a universal language of beauty, the Embassy aims to foster mutual understanding and lasting connections between the two countries.

The Embassy of Japan remains committed to introducing Japan’s rich cultural heritage and looks forward to hosting future cultural events.
