Jordan Daily – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi held a series of bilateral meetings Friday during the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, focusing on escalating tensions in the Middle East and humanitarian efforts.
Safadi met with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to discuss efforts to stop Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the escalating violence in the West Bank. They also discussed ensuring sustainable aid to all parts of Gaza and protecting civilians. The talks touched on the Syrian refugee crisis and concerns about dwindling international support for refugees, host countries, and aid organizations. The ministers also discussed bilateral relations.
In a separate meeting, Safadi and Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly discussed strengthening Jordan-Canada relations and the Middle East’s dangerous developments. They also discussed efforts to stop the Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon and called for continued funding of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Safadi also met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita as part of joint Arab efforts to address the situation in Gaza. They called for effective international action to stop Israeli aggression, protect civilians, and ensure sustainable humanitarian aid.
In a meeting with newly-appointed Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh, the two discussed the ongoing Syrian crisis, border security, combating drug smuggling, and bilateral relations. They emphasized the importance of a comprehensive solution to Syria’s conflict that preserves the country’s security and unity.
Safadi and Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren also called for intensified efforts to stop Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon. They stressed that halting the violence is the only path to a two-state solution.
The minister met with International Committee of the Red Cross President Mirjana Spoljaric to discuss achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and protecting civilians and humanitarian facilities.
Safadi and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for an international effort to halt Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon as a first step toward preventing further conflict.
In a meeting with Dutch Foreign Minister Casper Veldkamp, Safadi reiterated the need to adhere to international law and ensure the protection of civilians while maintaining the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Safadi also spoke with Gregory Meeks, head of the Democratic Caucus at the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, warning that continued Israeli aggression could further destabilize regional security.
In a similar meeting, Safadi and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil urged the UN Security Council to stop Israeli aggression and address ongoing violations of international law.
The foreign minister also met with U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield to discuss efforts to stop Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon. Safadi stressed the need for the Security Council to address Israeli violations and threats to regional stability.
Safadi participated in an open session of the UN Security Council on the Middle East and the Palestinian issue held alongside the 79th session of the General Assembly.
