Jordan Daily – France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco and Andorra on Monday announced their formal recognition of the State of Palestine during a U.N.-backed conference on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
The move follows similar decisions by Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal on Sunday, bringing the number of U.N. member states recognizing Palestine to at least 157 out of 193.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the decision confirmed that “the Palestinian people are not expendable,” while leaders from the other European states described recognition as a step to revive diplomacy and secure a two-state solution.
The United Nations says a two-state framework- creating a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel within 1967 borders – is the only credible path to a lasting peace. The U.S. continues to block Palestine’s bid for full U.N. membership, leaving it with observer status.
