Jordan Daily – German Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues, Ambassador Deike Potzel, has made her fourth visit to Jordan since the outbreak of war in Gaza began, meeting with Jordanian officials to discuss increasing aid to Gaza.
Since October 2023, Germany has tripled its humanitarian support for Gaza’s civilian population, contributing more than 180 million euros, bringing the total to around 255 million euros. On March 25, an additional 45 million euros were pledged to UNRWA in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank, reinforcing Germany’s position as one of the largest humanitarian donors to the Palestinian territories.
In a statement to Jordan Daily , Germany is also backing Jordan’s efforts to assist the people of Gaza, providing life-saving medicines, medical equipment such as defibrillators and surgical materials for Jordanian field hospitals in Gaza, and fuel for the Royal Jordanian Air Forces’ airdrops over Gaza. Since mid-March, the German Air Force has joined the international air bridge for Gaza, completing 24 airdrops and delivering over 150 tons of relief goods
“Through the airdrops, Jordan, Germany, and other international partners are making an important contribution to delivering life-saving assistance to the Palestinian population,” said Ambassador Potzel after participating in an airdrop over North-Gaza on Sunday. “However, we know that providing aid by air or sea is not enough: Ensuring more aid by land for Gaza is key – immediately and consistently.”
In recent weeks, Germany and Jordan have been collaborating with the United Nations to expand the Jordan Corridor, which transports aid into Gaza via land. Germany will provide an additional 4 million euros to purchase trucks and fuel for the relief convoys.
“In my meetings, my Jordanian interlocutors and I have continued to work on concrete, pragmatic solutions to simplify and speed up the inspection and transport of humanitarian goods from Jordan straight into Gaza. Germany will continue to support Jordan’s efforts in whichever way we can,” Ambassador Potzel emphasized.
