Jordan Daily – Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced ongoing oil and gas exploration efforts across several regions, including the Risha gas field, but tempered expectations regarding the country’s ability to become an energy exporter in the near future.
Linda Al-Naimat, the ministry’s spokesperson, explained that while gas production from the Risha field may help meet some of Jordan’s domestic energy needs and contribute to the country’s overall energy mix, it is too early to speak of export potential. She emphasized that developing gas fields requires significant time and years of continued work.
Al-Naimat noted that the discovered quantities of gas at the Risha field are already being used to support local industries. The ministry’s efforts to supply natural gas to these industries have had positive effects, reducing operational costs and enhancing their competitiveness in regional and global markets. This is also expected to create more job opportunities.
She cautioned against inflated expectations regarding Jordan’s energy sector, urging a rational and strategic approach to understanding the country’s production capabilities.
Earlier, Bahjat Al-Adwan, Director of Natural Resources at the Ministry of Energy, told Al-Mamlaka TV that studies have revealed commercial quantities of gas in the Risha field, estimated at 9.4 trillion cubic feet. However, Al-Adwan reiterated that while the findings are promising, the gas is intended primarily to meet domestic demand, with no plans for export at present.
