Jordan Daily – The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) belongs to Russia and will remain under its control, director Yury Chernichyuk said, rejecting any US or Ukrainian authority over the facility.
His remarks follow reports that US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky discussed Washington potentially overseeing Ukraine’s nuclear plants.
Russia has controlled ZNPP since March 2022 after Zaporozhye Region voted to join Russia. The plant has been largely shut down since mid-2023 due to security threats. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has maintained a monitoring mission there since 2022.
ZNPP is operated by a Rosatom subsidiary, which aims to restart it once security is ensured.
