Syrian president’s brother visit sparks controversy over ties to former regime

By : JD

Jordan Daily – A recent visit by Jamal Al-Sharaa, brother of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, to the guesthouse of tribal leader Farhan Al-Marsoumi has stirred controversy after photos circulated online showing him with figures accused of links to Syria’s former regime and its Iranian ally.

The Syrian Presidency issued a statement via state news agency SANA clarifying that Jamal Al-Sharaa holds no official government role and attended the event in a personal capacity. It emphasized that all citizens are equal before the law, and no special privileges are granted outside state institutions.

Cultural Minister Mohammad Saleh, also seen in the photos, faced backlash and issued an apology on social media, saying he cannot vet everyone he is photographed with. “I apologize to the Syrian people for any unintended photo with individuals associated with the former regime,” he said.

Farhan Al-Marsoumi denied allegations of political ties, stating his interactions with former regime figures were solely to support his tribe and other communities, not for political reasons.
