IRUSA, UNHCR launch new health program for refugees in Jordan

By : JD

Jordan Daily – Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA) and the UN refugee agency UNHCR have launched an expanded partnership to boost specialist healthcare for refugees and host communities in Jordan, the UNHCR said on Sunday.

IRUSA will provide $2.5 million over the next year to strengthen health services, support clinics and mobile outreach, and expand capacity for complex medical needs. The initiative comes as humanitarian funding faces mounting pressure and demand for advanced treatment among refugees continues to rise.

As part of the partnership, IRUSA is piloting a medical mission program that deploys specialist staff, including cardiologists and trained medical teams, to treat refugees and vulnerable Jordanians. The program is run with the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) and supported by Jordan University Hospital.

Hospital Director General Nader Al-Bsoul said the facility has dedicated catheterization rooms, advanced equipment, and a full medical team for the mission. More than 80 cardiac cases have been assessed ahead of catheterization and stent procedures.

IRUSA CEO Ahmed Shehata noted the organization aims to ensure refugees “are provided with essential, lifesaving health services.”

UNHCR’s representative in Jordan, Maria Stavropoulou, said the partnership will have a “direct impact on the lives of refugees in Jordan.”

USA for UNHCR CEO Suzanne Ehlers said IRUSA’s approach shows how innovation can improve humanitarian outcomes through targeted medical interventions.

The expanded cooperation is expected to reinforce long-term resilience and sustain critical health services for refugees and communities across Jordan.
