Jordanian NGOs defend UN’s Albanese after U.S. sanctions over Gaza reports

Jordan Daily – A coalition of Jordanian civil society groups on Thursday condemned U.S. sanctions against Francesca Albanese, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, calling the move a “flagrant assault” on international justice and a show of complicity in the Gaza conflict.

The Coordination Committee of Civil Society Organizations (Himam) said the U.S. decision sets a “dangerous precedent” by targeting a U.N. official who has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and criticized international actors for enabling the crisis through silence or support.

“Rather than revisiting its disastrous policies toward Israeli crimes, the U.S. has chosen to punish those who expose its complicity,” Himam said in a statement received by Jordan Daily.

Albanese has faced mounting criticism over her reports on Gaza. The U.S. State Department announced sanctions earlier this week, accusing her of bias and inflammatory rhetoric.

Himam argued that the sanctions violate the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, which protects U.N. officials from retaliation for actions taken in their official capacity.

“This is not just an attack on one official,” the group said, “but on the independence of the entire international human rights system.”

Calling the move a deliberate effort to undermine accountability mechanisms, Himam urged the United Nations and its human rights bodies to defend Albanese and reject what it described as political intimidation.

“Justice is not a crime,” the statement concluded.”Silence in the face of genocide is the real crime that history must hold accountable.”
