Jordan Daily – The Royal Thai Embassy in Amman, in collaboration with the Jordan Muaythai Association and the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA), hosted on Friday the Essence of Muaythai 2024 tournament at the Sports Palace Hall in Al Hussein Youth City, Amman. More than 1,000 Jordanians and expatriates attended the event.
The tournament featured four weight classes — 54 kg, 60 kg, 67 kg, and 71 kg — with athletes from Muaythai gyms across Jordan, including Amman, Aqaba, Irbid, and other cities, competing. Preliminary matches took place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by the final matches from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The official opening ceremony was held at 7 p.m. and attended by several distinguished guests, including ambassadors from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Panama. Jordanian dignitaries present included Dr. Hussein Al Jabour, Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports; Colonel Yanal Al-Jazi, Director of the General Secretariat of the Police Sports Federation; high-ranking officials from the Jordan Olympic Committee; and the president of the Jordan-Thailand Friendship Association. Executive members of the Jordan Muaythai Federation were also among the honorary attendees.
In his opening remarks, Supark Prongthura, Thailand’s ambassador to Jordan, welcomed participants and reiterated the embassy’s commitment to promoting Muaythai in Jordan. He also expressed hopes for Muaythai to be recognized as an official Olympic sport in the future.
Following the tournament, the Thai ambassador, alongside his spouse and the honorary guests, presented awards to the first- and second-place winners. The event highlighted the growing popularity of Muaythai in Jordan and aimed to strengthen cultural, sporting, and diplomatic ties between Jordan and Thailand.
