Jordan Daily – The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Amman on Wednesday marked the 22nd anniversary of the death of Heydar Aliyev, the country’s national leader, highlighting his role in shaping modern Azerbaijan.

Aliyev, who died on Dec. 12, 2003, is credited with steering Azerbaijan toward political stability and market-oriented reforms after the collapse of the Soviet Union. His government introduced a new constitution, strengthened state institutions and laid the groundwork for the country’s energy-driven economic growth, including the landmark 1994 “Contract of the Century.”

Born in 1923 in Nakhchivan, Aliyev rose through Soviet political ranks, serving on the Politburo and as first deputy prime minister of the USSR. He became Azerbaijan’s president in 1993 and was re-elected in 1998. The embassy noted that his policies helped maintain Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity during periods of conflict and instability, and strengthened its foreign relations.

Aliyev’s legacy continues under President Ilham Aliyev, including the 2020 victory in the 44-day war and recent steps toward peace. It also underscored the strong ties between Azerbaijan and Jordan, rooted in shared cultural and political interests and reinforced by high-level contacts since 1994.

The embassy highlighted recent progress in bilateral cooperation, including this week’s fourth meeting of the Azerbaijan-Jordan joint governmental commission in Baku, where agreements were signed on economic, agricultural, health, tourism and digital- economy cooperation.

Azerbaijan expressed appreciation to Jordan for naming a street in Amman after Heydar Aliyev, noting that Baku has likewise named a street after the late King Hussein.
