Jordan Daily – China on Monday condemned U.S. efforts to pressure G7 and NATO allies into imposing tariffs on Beijing over its purchases of Russian oil, warning it would retaliate if its interests are harmed.
The Financial Times reported last week that Washington had asked G7 finance ministers to consider 50-100% secondary tariffs on Chinese and Indian imports tied to Russian oil. U.S. President Donald Trump has also urged the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from Beijing and New Delhi as part of efforts to cut Moscow’s revenues.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said it was “fully legitimate and lawful” for Beijing to maintain trade and energy ties with Russia, describing Washington’s push as “unilateralism, bullying, and economic coercion.”
“Facts have proven that coercion and pressure win no hearts and minds, still less will they solve anything,” Lin told reporters, adding that China would take “resolute countermeasures” if its rights were infringed.
EU officials have begun preliminary talks on possible secondary sanctions on China over Russian energy imports but are seeking U.S. backing before moving forward, the FT reported.
Russia has become a top oil supplier to both China and India since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022. During a visit to Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the West against speaking to major economies like China and India in an “unacceptable” tone.
