Human rights awareness event launched in Zarqa

Jordan Daily – The eighth edition of the “Human Rights Today and Every Day” exhibition kicked off Thursday in Zarqa Governorate, marking the 77th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event is organized by the Community Media Network in partnership with the Naya Community Network, with support from the European Union.

The all-day event at the Naya Community Network headquartersfeatured a range of interactive and awareness-raising activities aimed at promoting human rights values and embedding them as a daily practice in society.

Daoud Kuttab, Director General of the Community Media Network, said the event aims to connect citizens with civil society organizations working on issues related to women’s, children’s, labor, and other rights, while informing participants about their rights and ways to claim and defend them.

Kuttab noted that this year’s edition marks the first time the exhibition has been held outside the capital, Amman, as part of an effort to expand access to human rights principles across different communities and regions. He added that there are plans to extend the exhibition to other governorates in northern and southern Jordan in the future.

Angela Martini, Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Jordan, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to defending human rights at both the domestic and international levels, describing them as fundamental pillars of any society.

Martini said addressing current human rights challenges requires continuous awareness and the daily practice of these values. She added that EU support for human rights extends from the political level to grassroots initiatives, including backing small projects that raise awareness among various age groups.

She also praised Jordanian civil society initiatives, highlighting the important role played by youth and local communities in promoting human rights and ensuring they are practiced beyond annual commemorations.

Zarqa Governor Dr. Firas Abu Qaoud said the exhibition is distinguished by the diversity and richness of participating institutions, enabling visitors to receive direct consultations and follow-up services from specialized authorities.

Abu Qaoud described holding the annual exhibition in the governorates as an initiative worthy of expansion nationwide. He stressed that the governorate plays a key role in monitoring human rights issues, particularly given the high number of cases related to family, child, and labor rights in Zarqa.

He emphasized the importance of such exhibitions in raising public awareness, especially among groups with limited knowledge of their rights, and in providing access to necessary services to address related challenges.
