Jordan Daily - Ireland’s Ambassador to Jordan and Iraq Marianne Bolger extended St. Patrick’s Day greetings to Irish communities in the region while expressing concern over escalating conflict in the Middle East and calling for an urgent de-escalation.
“On this St. Patrick's Day I'd like to take this opportunity to extend greetings to our wonderful Irish communities in Jordan and Iraq and to all our partners and friends,” Bolger said in a video message released by the Irish embassy in Amman, seen by Jordan Daily.
“Each year our National Day provides us with an opportunity to reflect and take pride in our rich cultural heritage and the tremendous impact that Irish people have made around the world,” she added.
Bolger said this year’s celebration comes “against the background of yet another conflict in the Middle East and the Gulf region,” adding that Ireland remains deeply concerned by reports of rising civilian casualties.
“We remain deeply concerned by this escalating conflict and the terrible reports of growing numbers of civilian deaths and casualties, especially in Iran and Lebanon,” she said.
“Ireland's position is clear, in any conflict all parties must adhere to international humanitarian law.”
She added that the priority now must be to reduce tensions. “We believe now that the priority must be to de-escalate this conflict urgently and end it quickly.”
Bolger also addressed Irish citizens living in the region, acknowledging uncertainty caused by the crisis.
“To all our Irish communities in Jordan and Iraq I know that this is a difficult and uncertain time for you all and we are thinking of you,” she said, adding that embassy staff remain in regular contact with registered citizens to provide advice and assistance.
