Jordan, Syria to deepen joint efforts against drug smuggling, address refugee issue

Jordan Daily – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, held discussions with Syria’s Foreign Minister, Bassam Sabbagh, centering on the challenges of the refugee crisis and the ongoing fight against drug smuggling.

Safadi underscored that drug trafficking remains a persistent threat, one that Jordan is actively confronting with all available resources.

The two officials agreed to strengthen their collaboration through the joint Jordanian-Syrian committee, which was established in July of last year to tackle the issue of cross-border drug smuggling.

In their talks, the ministers also committed to launching a sustained dialogue aimed at facilitating the voluntary return of Syrian refugees.

Minister Safadi reiterated that the ultimate resolution to the refugee crisis lies in ensuring their return to Syria, while stressing that the international community must continue to uphold its responsibilities toward the refugees until that goal is realized.

Additionally, Safadi and Sabbagh agreed to address broader bilateral issues through a forthcoming meeting of relevant ministers, with a date to be set by both sides in the near future.

The two ministers reaffirmed their cooperation in advancing efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict, including through the Arab Contact Group. They emphasized the need for concrete steps, grounded in the principles and framework established by the Amman Declaration of May 1 last year, to bring about a resolution to the Syrian crisis.
