Jenin clashes a key test for Palestinian Authority’s control, say analysts

By : JD News Editor

Jordan Daily – Since December 14, intense fighting has engulfed the Jenin refugee camp, where Palestinian security forces have been locked in fierce clashes with the “Jenin Brigade,” a group composed of fighters from various Palestinian factions. The violence has resulted in the deaths of 14 people, including six members of the Palestinian security forces, a social media activist, six civilians, and a commander from the Jenin Brigade.

Khalil Shaheen, a political analyst, described the situation in Jenin as a pivotal moment in which the Palestinian Authority is attempting to reassert control and establish security in the camp and its surrounding areas.

He suggested that this approach could eventually extend to other regions. Shaheen stressed that the Palestinian leadership is fully aware it is being tested and is trying to withstand the pressure amid ongoing Israeli attacks and broader shifts in the region as it braces for the incoming Trump administration.

Some analysts believe that the Palestinian Authority is positioning itself for the future by securing control of the Jenin camp, one of the most heavily armed camps in the West Bank. By demonstrating its ability to maintain order in such a volatile area, it aims to show it can also restore control in Gaza after a 15-month Israeli military campaign.

A senior Palestinian official, who requested anonymity, told Agence France-Presse that President Mahmoud Abbas “firmly rejects any mediation” and is adamant that militants in the camp “must surrender themselves and their weapons” to the Palestinian Authority.

Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad have accused the Palestinian Authority of serving Israeli interests, fueling concerns of a deepening internal conflict between Palestinian factions.
